The Senate at the resumption of plenary on Tuesday, summoned all service chiefs to appear before it over rising insecurity in Nigeria.

This followed a motion moved by Senate Majority Leader Sen. Bamidele Opeyemi on behalf of the 109 senators after an Executive Session.

The senate also resolved to meet with President Bola Tinubu after meeting with the service chiefs, to discuss the way forward.

Presenting the motion, the senate majority leader, said the senate was concerned about the spate of insecurity in Nigeria in recent times.

He made specific reference to the recent killing of residents and security personnel in Agatu as well as the killing of 11 people in Logo, both in Benue State.

He also made reference to the Killing of two traditional rulers and the kidnapping of school pupils in Ekiti State, and the killing of several people in Plateau State as well as the bomb explosion in Ibadan where lives were lost and property lost.

Opeyemi said the lawmakers had resolved following the development to invite security chiefs for an interactive session on the spate of insecurity in the country.

In his remarkes, the President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio thanked the lawmakers for moving the motion, saying the meeting with the service chiefs would go a long way in helping to tackle the problem.

“After the session with the security chiefs next week either in batch or individually, we will fix time to discuss outcome with president because we have the responsibility to do that.

“Security is everybody’s business because without it there cannot be progress.

“We are determined to make laws and carry out oversights for the improvement of Nigeria.

The senate thereafter adjourned till Feb. 6.
