The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) have suspended planned strike following Federal Government’s intervention.

The strike which was planned to commence Oct. 3, was suspended for 30 days.

The suspended strike followed a five-hour meeting between the Federal Government and leaders of the joint union, after which an agreement was reached.

Part of the agreement reached was that for the period of three months beginning from October, 15 million households, including vulnerable pensioners should be paid N25,000 monthly.

They also agreed that government would release N100billion for high capacity CNG buses for mass transit

They further agreed that government should give the sum of N35,000 wage to all federal government workers from September pending when a new national minimum wage would be signed into law.

Also, a minimum wage committee would be inaugurated within a month.

Equally, government should suspend collection of Value Added Tax (VAT) on Diesel for six months beginning from October, while implementing various tax incentives for public and private sectors.

Furthermore, the Ministry of Labour and Employment would engage with Federal Tertiary Education workers on isssues around salaries and wages.

Others are:

1. The Federal Government will increase its initiatives on subsidised distribution of fertilizers to farmers across the country.

2. A resolution of the leadership crisis between NURTW and RTEAN on or before October 13.

3. The Federal Government should urge State Government through the National Economic Council and Governors Forum to implement wage award for their workers, local government and private sector workers.

4. The Federal Government commits to the provision of funds as announced by the President on the 1st of August broadcast to the Nation for Micro and Small Scale Enterprises. The MSMEs beneficiaries should commit to the principle of decent jobs.

5. A joint visitation will be made to the refineries to ascertain their rehabilitation status.

6. All parties commit to henceforth abide by the dictates of Social dialogue in all our future engagements.

7. The NLC and TUC accept to suspend for 30 days the planned Indefinite Nationwide strike scheduled to begin, Tuesday, the 3rd of October, 2023.

8. This Memorandum shall be filed with the relevant Court of competent jurisdiction within one (1) week as consent judgment by the Federal Government.
