Veteran songwriter Onyeka Onwenu has died.

Onwenu, who died at 72, was reported to have slumped shortly after performing at the birthday party of Stella Okoli, owner of Emzor Pharmaceuticals.

She was reportedly confirmed dead at a hospital in Victoria Island.

Onyeka Onwenu, who was born in 1952, in Obosi, Anambra State, Nigeria, horned her music career in the 1980s and shot into limelight with her debut album, “For the Love of You,” in 1981.

Her hit song “One Love”, which resonates with many Nigerians also shot her to limelight.

Besides singing, Onwenu was an actress and she acted in a number of Nollywood movies including Half of Yellow Sun.

She also delved into politics and was appointed as the Chairperson of the Imo State Council for Arts and Culture in 2013.

She was later in 2016, appointed as Director-General of the National Centre for Women Development.

The music icon has won several awards for her contribution to the music world and the society at large.

She was conferred with the National Honors of Member of the Order of the Federal Republic (MFR) in 2011.

The late singer, who was dubbed “Elegant Stallion” by the media, was also a journalist, human rights and social activist as well former X Factor series judge.
