The Senate has passed the bill prescribing death penalty for persons convicted of drug trafficking in Nigeria.

This followed report of joint committee on Judiciary, Human Rights and Legal Matters, and Drugs and Narcotics at plenary on Thursday.

The Chairman, Senate Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights and Legal Matters, Sen. Mohammed Monguno (Borno North) presented the report on behalf of the joint committee.

He said the passage of the bill, National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) Act(amendment) Bill, 2024 was apt in view of the enormous harm caused by drugs in the country.

The death penalty, which is contained in Clause 11 of the bill, which is a House of Representatives bill, was passed through voice vote among other clauses.
