The House of Representatives at the resumption of plenary on Tuesday after a five week recess, ordered the Nigeria Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) to suspend implementation of the new electricity tariff.

This followed a matter of urgent public importance moved by Rep. Nkemkanma Kama.

The lower chamber resolved to set up an ad hoc committee comprising of committees on Power, National Planning among others, to come up with a public hearing on the price regulation of the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry (NESI).

Kama said there was a need to protect consumer rights, win public trust and ensure accountability and transparency.

NERC had recently announced the increase in electricity tariff for Band A customers by 230 percent, from ₦68 per kilowatt per hour to ₦225 kilowatt per hour.

The NERC Chairman, Musliu Oseni, had in a statement, said that Band A accounted for 15 per cent of the 12 million electricity consumers in Nigeria..
